About my work
All of my work is hand thrown on the potter's wheel. I make functional wares that are designed to be used and handled, employing a variety of clays, glazes, materials, and tools to create my work that ranges from bowls and mugs to teapots and vases.
My work is produced in four main clay bodies - groggy terracotta, light stoneware, white porcelain, and mixed black porcelain. Almost all my pots are produced “off the hump,” meaning they are thrown off the top of a larger mound of clay on the wheel. This style doesn’t necessitate speed changes and allows me to make varied sets of work without stopping the wheel.
All of my glazes are either mixed from raw materials or derived from commercially purchased recipes. Application varies with each clay body, but I often leave pots exposed on the exterior to emphasize clay texture.
I work with mid-range materials, firing at temperatures around 2100°F to 2200°F. While I enjoy working with the flexibility of reduction kiln atmospheres, almost all my work is fired in the oxidation environment of an electric kiln.
