Artist Statement

I am inspired by the materials that I use. I enjoy making simple objects, showcasing the clay, finding a harmony of clay and glaze that doesn’t distract from form, and I tend to leave minimal decorative flare. Much of my work features bare clay or a uniform glaze. Investigating this tension between materials often results in casual handmarkings on pots or obsessively refining delicate surfaces with tools. A few particular forms, either intentionally thrown or stumbled upon, have stood out to me over the years and I have been inspired to work with them repeatedly. You might see plenty of similarly shaped mugs or bowls in my collection of work.

For me, throwing is an important outlet for relaxation and creativity, but I am mainly motivated by producing thoughtful and beautiful objects that can be used. All of my work is functional and designed to be handled. As I continue to throw, I have developed an appreciation for the time it takes to produce a thoughtful object and the value of using handmade pots. I hope my pots that end up in the hands of others are valued but familiarly used to eat, drink, make food, hold items, and even assume the natural patina of all frequently used objects.
